José Fernández Covich
He studied Secondary Education with a mention in Plastic Arts at the Universidad de Concepción, Chile, between 1983 and 1988. Founding member of the Grisalia group, he has developed his plastic work in the city of Concepción.
Visual strategy: He has worked with xylographic techniques in works of expressionist figuration that address the urban landscape of nocturnal atmospheres. It incorporates Gothic symbols and human beings of deformed appearance together with animals, insects, everyday objects and characters of clear inspiration in the popular imagery.
In paintings he has worked on oil and acrylic on canvas and wood, which shows a clear influence of the techniques of engraving. Applying vibrant colors in short circular brushstrokes, achieving superimposed areas that give shape to natural and architectural spaces. He tackles religious scenes in which aggressive hybrid beings allude to evil and sin, taking charge of establishing the internal tension of the composition.
He has also ventured into sculpture using mixed techniques in wood, metal, glass, stone and iron.
